Social Media – Is it changing the face of the news industry?

Over the past couple of years, I have seen a trend toward people giving up their newspaper subscription, not watching the local television news and turning more and more to their computers.

Where are people going for the latest news.  My guess, people  want to be a part of the news and make the news.  The (New 2010 News)  is “US”, “ME”. All of us have the power to be heard. We are the news!

Last night there was a powerful thunderstorm, with heavy rains, strong winds and hail.  I was stuck in my car waiting for my son to get done with practice. I went on my iPhone to find local reporters everywhere leaving updates on the storm on Facebook and Twitter.  Anything from sirens being heard to reports of tornadoes in some parts of the state.

The news has gone real-time.  We do not have to wait till the nightly news or top of the hour. People are talking about the latest issues, gossip, sports, etc.  In addition, with geo-location. (foursquare) we can inform people where we are and where we have been.

Do you share your news?

Maybe its time to be a reporter. You can report other people’s news or you can make your own.  With all of these options,  you have more power at your fingertips than you ever imagined.  Stay informed, connect with interesting people, make sure your content is interesting. You may find yourself with more news information than ever before.
