I think these figures speak to the current trend of making and selling homemade pet treats.
Here are some things I have been noticing:
The last few weeks I have seen an increase in the number of pet treats being sold at Farmers Markets.
An increase in the number of inquiries regarding pet treat analysis and labeling.
An increase in the number of homemade pet treat businesses. Try a Google Search 1, 540,000 results
Pet treats can be sold in a wide variety of places: hardware stores, outdoor markets, grocery stores, convenience stores, online and in veterinary offices.
As with any food item for sale, it is important to follow proper regulations. One of these regulations, in particular is labeling. Although it may not be required in all places, it really is important for the buyer to be aware of the ingredients that make up the product and to know how much protein and fat are included in the product. In addition, more and more pet treat producers are looking at shelf life testing as a way to sell their product and know exactly how long their product will stay fresh.

3 cups plain yogurt
1 ripe banana
1 cup smooth peanut butter (Cammie prefers Reese’s)
1 tablespoon honey
1. Puree all of the above until smooth in texture with a food processor or blender.
2. Pour into ice cube trays and freeze.
3. Pop one out and reward your best canine friend.
